DRM-free in 2003… Oh wait, it’s already 2007

iTunes Plus

With the announcement of iTunes Plus, Apple takes us one step closer to a DRM-free world. According to the site:

For just 30¢ more per song, choose iTunes Plus songs that feature higher quality, 256 kbps AAC encoding — twice the standard bit rate — and no DRM (digital rights management). That means you can play it on iPod and other digital music players and an unlimited number of computers.

For just 99¢ less per song, you could’ve been doing this for years.

I’m not sure this is awesome at all, in fact, I think this tiered pricing is gimmicky and outside of apple’s typical MO.

TUAW also says the 256kbps songs embed your user information so that sharing can be tracked if necessary. Uncool.

Hey! Have I got a deal for you. Remember those restrictions I imposed on the things you bought from me? Well, I’ll remove them for only 30% extra!

Who is listening to that Amy Winehouse album? Because I want to punch them in the throat.
