What I Can Understand is that the Soundtrack Rocked

This post has been sitting in my drafts folder ever since HBO announced a few weeks ago that John From Cincinnati would not be back for a second season.
Although JFC was almost unanimously panned by everyone who bothered to watch, I have a soft spot for HBO shows, especially those born from the mind of David Milch (of Deadwood fame). The show was, without a doubt, aesthetically pleasing. It was also poignant at points, and even managed to inspire goose bumps every now and then (e.g. triumphant sky/wave-riding return of John and Shaun). But the plot points, dialogue and nearly every other key influencer of any given show’s palatability were utterly confounding to say the least. The one thing that kept me watching, though, other than the promise that Zack Morris would eventually join the cast (which already included Dylan McKay), was the show’s soundtrack.
Whether it was the title theme, a random and incomprehensible montage, or the ending credit accompaniment, this show did not disappoint musically. From Dylan to Muse, the soundtrack was varied, but always synced up nicely with the show’s gritty-shades-of-blue look and feel. I can’t quite say that I’m sad to see it go, but I can say the I’m sad to hear it go.
Any other shows out there right now with rocking soundtracks? Big plus if, in addition to having great soundtracks, they’re actually enjoyable to watch as well. Here’s the video for “Johnny Appleseed” by Joe Strummer, the song from JFC’s opening credits…

No soundtrack could make me want to watch another episode of that show. HBO again shows why they are the leader in television right now- getting rid of shows when they are obviously horrible. Kudos, HBO.
