It’s not too late to review this one, right?
Kevin Drew’s ‘Spirit If…’
Let’s talk about some indie rock goodness. I was anxious for this one to be released. I’m always interested in what elements make my favorite band’s tick. Broken Social Scene has an essence, “spirit,” if you will, that seems to be Kevin Drew’s influence on the sound. Of course we know he’s one of the two founders and sings much of the material (yada yada yada), but this album really says something about how much of a musical force this guy is in one of the best “newer” bands around.
The first time I settled into my seat on the train and dialed my iPod to this album, I could have sworn every song was better than the last. There is a flow to the songs which makes you want to hear every successive track which SHOULD be the goal of ever artist who releases a compilation of music.
Some people can’t really appreciate Broken Social Scene because there is so much going on. The tug of war on the ears is too much for them. Some people like BSS for that reason. With ‘Spirit If…’ you don’t really have deal with either argument. It’s noisy at times but often soft and folk-like. Now that I’ve given it ample airtime, I have to say the tracks I can’t get enough of on this here record are (in no particular order): ‘Lucky Ones’, ‘Big Love’, ‘Backed Out on The…’, and ‘Bodhi Sappy Weekend’. Every other song on the record earns honorable mention in my book for some reason or another. They’re all good in their own way.
Let’s face it, as the central figure in the band, I don’t think he was out to re-invent the wheel here. As you’d expect from reading the “Broken Social Scene Presents:” prefix, he’s joined by many of our favorite BSS cohorts. Although, it really does sound like a BSS album at heart, these songs have the singular vision some fans missed with their last effort, the self-titled ‘Broken Social Scene’. What’s interesting (if you listen to the video interview from Rolling Stone), is that this guy makes up the words as he goes along most of the time. No wonder he makes sense, but - doesn’t make sense - so much! I know someone else who does that (I wonder who? hmmm…).
Anywho, I really like this one peeps. You’ve probably worn it out by now. Still, I felt obligated to post this for the millions of readers who rely on our insight and the needy children in Philadelphia.
