Peter Morén and his album of future rockommercial songs.

Peter Moren

We all fell in love with Peter Bjorn and John’s last album Writer’s Block and why shouldn’t we? Remember that scene in Back to the Future where Marty is playing “Johnny B Goode” and Marvin Berry is calling his cousin Chuck to let him hear what will eventually be that great new sound he’s looking for? That’s what it was like for me to hear that album. It was the first time in a long time that I was enjoying Pop and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Unfortunately for all of us, the advertisers noted this as well and began to seriously flood your beloved TV with PB&J tunes. Who doesn’t remember that scene in Lost where Charlie was about to climatically bite it when you suddenly heard a familiar whistling and realized you were watching an AT&T commercial. Back then I didn’t think much of it. In fact, I was happy for them making a living and all. Then came the avalanche.

I quickly realized that the songs I love soundtracking commercials was worse than hearing them over and over on the radio. Little snippets. Just enough to get the song stuck in your head and then they would rip it away. And to make matters worse they replay that little snippet 20 times over the next hour. Eventually, you throw on your iPod one day and that song inevitably plays. Your first inclination is to punch the person you’re sitting next to, but instead you just hit the forward button. At least that’s my experience… What that hasn’t happened to you?

So that’s why, at first, I wasn’t all that excited to listen to a solo effort by the singer and writer of most of their songs. I’m happy to admit, however, that I was wrong. Although there are only 3 songs available for listening, there is something distinctively different about Peter Morén’s solo effort. There’s no doubt it’s still that catchy Pop I like so much, but somehow it’s more internal. And it isn’t Poppy for Pop’s sake either. Furthermore, it’s usefulness in commercials will be lost. These songs are much too quiet for that and not as produced. It’s just a small taste of the upcoming album, but it’s enough that I’m looking forward to it.

Oh yeah… I still can’t bring myself to take PB&J off the iPod. Please be careful when sitting next to me.
