Man Man will be playing at Chicago underground art space AV aerie tomorrow night. If you don’t already know, Man Man are a group of hirsuite dudes from Philly who play gut grabbing music that’s heavy on the percussion & is as influenced by Tom Waits as it is by their reptilian brainz. By this I mean that it’s abrasive and irresistable and totally spontaneous all at once. This is the last date on the tour & the only chance for Chicagoans to see them without their being billed under Modest Mouse, which I see as a plus. Their next album is said to be their “pop” album & hopefully they’ll be showcasing a few new ones for us tomorrow. Check out some stuff at their Myspace page.

Opening will be Bronze. I caught these guys when they played at Schuba’s Smooth Music Night a couple weeks back. Hot damn were they good. They have a very Drag City / Plush’s Fed / Jim O’Rourke sort of sound. Of course I mean this as the highest of complements. With tightly arranged AM pop songs backed by a brass section, multiple female voclists, and a bass player who anchors the grooze while bobbing incessantly on stage, they are a pleasure to see live. Sample “Chinatown” for a taste that’s sure to whet your appetite.

Speaking of smooth music: DJ STV SLV’s rock outfit May Or May Not will be playing at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art at 630. They’ll be doing their “experimental” set which favors soundscapes over song structures, so this is still worth seeing if you’ve already seen them playing on the fantastic new release, A Kaleidescope of Egos. Show’s free, and MOMN always put on a good one, so why not take the short detour on your way outta the Loop after work?

630pm: Zone out to the Psychedelic Sounds of The Thirteenth Floor Elevators May Or May Not
8pm: Eat a burrito.
9pm: More drinks
930pm: Get my smooth on.
Whenever Man Man takes the stage: Freak the fuck out.
