Review: French Fortune

fortuneWhile RTP traditionally focuses on the latest and greatest sounds that have already made their way through the US, every once in a great while we’re able to preview a band that will hopefully be making their way through our parts sooner rather than later, and deservedly so.

This past Sunday night I was able to catch France-based Fortune at a Paris venue called La Flèche d’Or, which for those of us familiar with a couple of Chicago’s most noteworthy venues, was almost the perfect hybrid of Double Door and Empty Bottle, with a few more underage kids and much, much more smoke.

fortuneThe show put on by Fortune was great. These guys are successfully integrating the electronic with both the indie and the popular, and so much better than most American bands that are trying to achieve the same thing, which is really saying something (I was formerly in one of those bands, and it’s harder than you think). An Apple laptop, plenty of Korg and Roland synths, and a great drummer made it all seem easy.

Anyway, check out their EP by downloading it from iTunes, which is the only place I could find it after an admittedly brief search. I remember each of these four songs very well from the show, and look forward to hearing recorded versions of the rest of the songs they played this past Sunday to a sellout crowd of French hipsters (who, in my opinion, were surprisingly a bit more palatable and less annoying than their Chicago and NYC brethren based on my short experience) when their full-length becomes available on 12/10.

As a side note: similar to Phoenix, Daft Punk, AIR, et al, all of this French band’s lyrics are in English. What’s up with that anyway? Totally not complaining, and in fact appreciative, but curious nonetheless.

English is way better for rhyming. When was the last time you heard a good rhyme for “Prendre soin des affaires.”

Those French BTO cover bands never stood a chance.

This EP rocks. I’m officially a fan.
