THE RTP Bestest Everest Ten… est

Readers, you’ve had time to really digest all of our individual 2007 Top Ten lists, which now brings us to the RTP Average.

This weighted scale inputs all of our individual lists into a complex, mathematical algorithm, utilizing a series of functions and their additive inverses (I don’t want to get too technicial, but I assure you it is science and incredibly awesome, let’s just say that “C” in maths really came in handy).

Before we get to it, special props to the people who made RTP happen. We should definitely give special hugs to Benom and KParks for their dedication to RTP, getting it off the ground and posting almost every flipping day. [stands from chair, begins slow, deliberate clap, not unlike the final scene in Mr. Holland’s Opus.]

Without further adieu, we now give you the official,

just peeked at p4k’s staff lists of top 25 records. neon bible appears on exactly five lists of nearly 40 writers, and never in the top 10. wow. too mainstream? too cleanly recorded? too well written?

    what the hell?

Don’t understand the fixation many here have w/ p4k. Other than the american apparel ads, perhaps.

There are plenty-o other qualified online outlets (allmusic.com trumps p4k in quality and quantity nearly every time, imho).

But to quirken’s main point, I wouldn’t say neon bible is too mainstream. On the contrary, I think it’s not as accessible as the debut though. I still enjoyed neon bible like many other RTPers this year, but your favorite canadian menonites set a high standard with Funeral.

The appeal is that, in spite of their insufferable pretentiousness, p4k still manages to find out about some great bands very early. I totally disregard their low ratings when I am already into an artist, but if they say something I’ve never heard of is great, then I make sure to check it out. Sometimes it’s shite, but every onjce in a while it’s the greatest things since PB&J (take Peter, Bjorn, & John, for example).

As for the Neon Bible - AF now occupy that purgatory between unknown and so well known it’s ironic to like them. As such, p4k’ers are forbidden from actually caring about them. If they keep up the consistency for a couple more albums & reach Spoon status they’ll regain their “respectability”.
