Exile In Guyville
I was lucky enough to score tickets to Liz Phair performing Exile In Guyville, one of my all-time favorite albums, in its entirety at The Vic last night. Liz looked amazing and it was really refreshing to see her revisit Guyville without having to wade through some of her more recent un-loved material.
There were […]
6/17/08: Swell Season, Chicago Theatre
Last night was the second of three sold out Swell Season shows at Chicago’s aptly named Chicago Theatre. Action-Squad’s fivecoat and I were in attendance, and had our hearts melted many times over.
A little backstory: I really like the Frames, the Irish rock and roll band that Glen Hansard has fronted since the […]

quirken’s birthday celebration
Islands live at Logan Square Auditorium
Let me begin with brief apologies for the tardiness of this post, by quoting oft quoted ‘anonymous’ when he said, “better late than never.” Being a father, I have since learned is not always true, though.

Not Guilty!
Wowzas.
Guitar Friday
Last night was the kickoff of the Waterfront Film Festival in Saugatuck, about 15 minutes down the lakeshore from RTP’s Michigan headquarters. The first showing is an outdoor screening, but before the sky turns dark and the projecter can run, the festival hosts live music.
Typically it’s crappy local bands, but this year, […]
Thom and Johnny cover Portishead’s “The Rip”
Guitar Friday
Smange and I saw CAKE last night at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. If you’re not familiar with this venue, it’s a botanic garden and sculpture park in Grand Rapids, Mich. and is completely bad ass. Every summer they host a concert series, and they always bring in good rock music.
Girl Power
There is a ton of good music coming out from women who are all building on Winehouse’s momentum and in-process flameout.
From Portishead’s comeback to Cat Power, Duffy, Zooey D and Santi White and her new band Santogold, there’s a bounty of talented female voices in indie music today.
I like Santi White’s voice, but apparently the […]
Four capital letters and a shit load of logos…
…make this Justice video for “DVNO” one of the best I’ve seen in ages. The ending literally gave me chills, but in the spirit of full disclosure (which is all the rage in the blogosphere these days), my job may make me somewhat biased toward font-related musical expression (true type dat).

Review: Islands at North Michigan Avenue Apple Store
I just got back from the Apple Store after catching most of a stripped down (no keys, acoustic guitars, abbreviated drum kit) performance by Islands. I was able to catch the first four songs of their set (”The Arm,” “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby,” “Creeper” and “J’aime Vous Voire Quitter”) before getting so disgusted by […]
