Review: Islands at North Michigan Avenue Apple Store
I just got back from the Apple Store after catching most of a stripped down (no keys, acoustic guitars, abbreviated drum kit) performance by Islands. I was able to catch the first four songs of their set (”The Arm,” “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby,” “Creeper” and “J’aime Vous Voire Quitter”) before getting so disgusted by Nick Diamond I was forced to leave. I swear that guy permeates douchebaggery to the point where it’s visible without him saying a word (kind of like stink lines). During his few seconds of banter between songs two and three, he managed to order around every Apple employee in sight and verbally scoff at both Dave Matthews and Mac enthusiasts (while performing at the Apple Store), and you could tell that his disdain was as sincere as it gets. Now I’m no Dave Matthews enthusiast, but seriously, shut up and play. Sad how this request (or is it an order?) is becoming relevant to more and more bands these days.
Anyway, the performance was actually pretty good — these guys just write good songs — so I’m sure those of you going to the “real” show tonight at the Logan Square Auditorium are in for a treat, although likely a treat with a douche-flavored cherry on top.
