Girl Power
There is a ton of good music coming out from women who are all building on Winehouse’s momentum and in-process flameout.
From Portishead’s comeback to Cat Power, Duffy, Zooey D and Santi White and her new band Santogold, there’s a bounty of talented female voices in indie music today.
I like Santi White’s voice, but apparently the creative magic behind this act is her collaborator and bandmate John Hill, with whom she previously paired in the ska band Stiffed.
Anyway, this is a cool video, and Santogold just came out with an eponymously named record. Check it out if you see it. It’s hard to miss - featuring a b&w photo of Santi ralphing up a big pile of gold glitter on the cover.

really? building on Winehouse’s momentum? that seems a bit broad. (get it)
I think indie music has always had a place for really talented women, we’re just getting lucky these days…
I generally agree with you. Over the last several years, there have been many many stellar female performers and recordings (PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, last year’s release by Tegan & Sara, Feist, goldfrapp, St. Vincent, the largely neglected ‘06 release by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians that was frickin stellar, to name just a few), but none that really broke through, with possible exception of KT Tunstall. And she’s more straight-ahead pop.
Winehouse really captured that 50s girl group sound and look in a way that resonated with the general public, while still managing to sound unique. It is obvious that she inspired a lot of the current crop - esp Cat Power and Duffster.
Thx for writing.
