Over the last several years, there have been many many stellar female performers and recordings (PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, last year's release by Tegan &#38; Sara, Feist, goldfrapp, St. Vincent, the largely neglected '06 release by Edie Brickell &#38; New Bohemians that was frickin stellar, to name just a few), but none that really broke through, with possible exception of KT Tunstall. And she's more straight-ahead pop.

Winehouse really captured that 50s girl group sound and look in a way that resonated with the general public, while still managing to sound unique. It is obvious that she inspired a lot of the current crop - esp Cat Power and Duffster.
