Guitar Friday
Smange and I saw CAKE last night at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. If you’re not familiar with this venue, it’s a botanic garden and sculpture park in Grand Rapids, Mich. and is completely bad ass. Every summer they host a concert series, and they always bring in good rock music.
CAKE kicked off this year’s series and rocked it with a tasty groove. I haven’t seen them in probably 10 years. And that was at the State Theater in downtown Detroit, and halfway through that show some rowdy concert-goer threw a beer cup on stage. Incensed by this offense, John McCrea had the kid escorted from the theater while encouraging the crowd to point and yell, “Fuck YOU white MAN!” Needless to say, I was geeked for this show.
The music was tight. The exact same white boy funk, alt-country, post-modern ironic geek rock that I discovered in high school. The set bounced back and forth between some newer songs and old favorites. Smange was delighted to hear “Love You Madly,” I was patiently waiting for “Italian Leather Sofa” (BESTEST EVEREST), but sadly my dream did not come true. Although I was very pleased with “Stickshifts and Safetybelts,” “Frank Sinatra” and an extended “Sheep Go to Heaven.”
As usual, John McCrea was incredibly fun to listen to even when not singing. He asked the crowd to calculate the amount spent in Iraq during one of their songs which was approximately three minutes (my calculation was $54 million). The winner received a cherry tree sapling, with only one stipulation, she must stand in front of the tree every year, take a picture and send it to the band. She’s a really cute girl, so I’m not sure who is coming out on top here, the girl or the band. Maybe it’s the tree…
OK, so I’ve wasted enough of your time rambling about this concert. Even though I didn’t mention the crowd surfing (an FMG first) or the swearing (which I’m sure pissed off the grouchy pensioners who live next door) or the intense knitting (a CAKE concert first).
Today’s Guitar Friday is obviously CAKE, playing their song, “Guitar.” Sadly, it’s in Vancouver since my videos wouldn’t upload last night.
